Civil Engineer II - Public Works Engineering The City of Ankeny is seeking applicants for the fulltime position of Civil Engineer II, which will report to the Public Works Engineering Manager within the Public Works Department. The full salary range is $78,030 - $104,717 with a starting range of $78,030 - $90,330 depending on experience, plus excellent benefits. Pre-employment drug screen and background check required. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Prepares, reviews, and approves designs, plans, specifications, engineering reports, and cost estimates for public infrastructure projects including street and utility improvements. Reviews the street paving, water mains, storm sewers, sanitary sewers, sidewalks / trails, storm water detention, grading, and erosion control measures for compliance with SUDAS and City of Ankeny standards and codes.Manages consultant-designed capital improvement projects and acts as the City's point of contact during the design and construction phases. Coordinates decisions with the consultant and applicable City staff across departments. Attends weekly construction meetings on the City's behalf.Leads the in-house engineering design and preparation of construction documents for capital improvement projects including plans, specifications, cost estimates, and bidding documents, and conducting project information meetings.Assists with the preparation of the City's annual Capital Improvement Program (CIP), including developing public improvement concepts, generating conceptual cost estimates, determining annual operating and maintenance costs, and formulating the five-year CIP document.Performs construction administration on in-house designed public improvement projects, including leading preconstruction meetings, preparing payment applications, reviewing change orders, and overseeing project closeout.Supervises the Engineering Technicians when they complete construction observation and testing of construction materials for in-house designed public improvement projects.Leads the advertising, interviewing, and hiring of the Engineering Division's annual Civil Engineering Intern summer position and supervises the intern's workload.Responds to inquiries and concerns from residents, businesses, contractors, and consultants regarding public infrastructure improvements, completes on-site investigations, and acts as the City's representative.Maintains records and plans for public improvement projects for sanitary sewers, storm sewers, streets, sidewalks / trails, water systems, traffic control facilities, and related public works projects.Assists with the work activities for the City's GIS database management, including data collection, data input, and mapping.Assists with traffic engineering studies including traffic counts, speed studies, and accident research.Assists with completing special projects, studies, and engineering reports including storm water routing, sanitary sewer and water capacity analysis, and pavement determinations. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS AND SKILLS: Knowledge of modern principles and practices of public works, civil engineering, and municipal utilities operations and maintenance; knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D software (or equivalent) and ArcReader GIS software (or equivalent); ability to coordinate and supervise the activities of engineering division personnel; ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously; ability to communicate and cooperate with officials, co-workers, consulting engineers, contractors, and the general public. REQUIRED SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering and possession of a Professional Civil Engineer license issued by the State of Iowa or equivalent from another state. If licensed in another state, must obtain a State of Iowa license within one (1) year of start date. A minimum of four (4) years of progressively responsible work experience in civil engineering including field and office experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
